The philosophy behind creation
Simone Crestani began working with glass at the age of 15.
It was just for fun:
«I looked for an internship to fill the summer, and it became my job – he remembers. I have never stopped playing with glass. It is a special substance: it is like blood; it has to flow through your veins to be able to control it. I love it because it chose me. I have only reciprocated its love. I am often reminded of the verse from Dante: Love, that absolves no one beloved from loving. My history with glass is similar to that of Paolo and Francesca. It is no coincidence that we’re in Hell. Since then, it has been a fatal, irresistible, and all-encompassing passion, capable of devouring my existence. I truly admire the purity of glass and the process by which it transforms from an incandescent, Lucifer material into something transparent and celestial».
Finding ways to combine materials and constantly discovering new fields of application for glass drives his work.
«I never back down when I have to find the technique to make something. The more difficult it is, the more fun it gets. Especially if I find the solution to transform the idea into glass».
He browses a lot of books and lives immersed in nature, so inspiration comes from there.
«What I see in my imagination I translate directly into glass. It is an instinctive process and quite fast now that I have mastered the technique. To develop challenging projects and approach perfection, it is essential to refine your rotation technique. Ultimately, the secret is learning to spin well, but you can only get there by cultivating dedication and working with consistency, passion, and the stubbornness of those who turn their art into a reason for living».
Finding poetry in imperfection is his poetics. He combines technique and creativity in a distinctive style, made of essential and clean harmonious forms that recall the natural world. His mastery and poetic sensibility allow glass to transcend its material nature, evolving into an elegant conceptual expression.
